Caste began to be an important discriminant of politics in Tamil Nadu in the British rule, when it became very apparent that rampant discrimination against non-brahmins existed in the state. This gave rise to the Dravidian Movement, arguably one of the largest social movements that is ongoing to date.
Because the movement started pre-independence, its principles and core thoughts have shaped the Tamil politics of today.
This report tries to untangle the complex history of caste politics in Tamil Nadu, by tracing its origins and ending with how it contrasts with the current political sphere of a centralized theme around Hindutva.
We will see how the underlying political ideologies and thoughts contrast or are similar to the political party propaganda in today’s Tamil Nadu with a special focus on how caste politics have evolved from pre-independence to today’s age.
