Jackson to Trump: A Historical and Contemporary Analysis of Assassination Attempts in US Politics

On the evening of July 13, 2024, former US President and Presidential candidate Donald J. Trump experienced an attempt on his life during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Thomas Matthew Crooks had shot 8 times from his assault rifle from approximately 120 metres away while atop the roof of a building.

Trump, with blood visible around his right ear due to the bullet grazing him, suffered no major injuries and was promptly ushered off stage by the Secret Service. While Trump survived with a minor wound, an audience member lost their life and two more were critically injured.

Promptly after the shooting, the Secret Service located Crooks and he was shot dead right on the roof that he had been sniping from. While walking off stage, Trump posed defiantly towards the crowd with his fist raised up in the air behind the cover of the Secret Service while his ear injury bled, mouthing the word “Fight!” over and over, leading to many heroic photos flooding the Internet with the news of the assassination attempt.

However, beyond the spectacle of the moment, the incident raises profound questions about the state of American politics and the security measures in place to protect public figures.

Although Trump managed to escape relatively unscathed, the assassination attempt itself brings forth many questions regarding atmosphere in US Politics. The very spirit of democracy comes into question as Former President Trump would not be the first in the colourful politics and history of the world’s oldest democracy to have experienced the event of an attempt on his life.
